Truck and heavy motor insurance
Prime movers, rigids and trailers. Cover for the truck, the liability that comes with it, and the money you lose while it is off the road.
A truck off the road stops earning immediately, and heavy vehicle repairs are rarely quick. That is why heavy motor cover is judged less on the premium than on how fast the insurer moves after a claim and what it pays while the vehicle is out of service. There is also more liability attached to a B double than to a van, both for the damage a heavy vehicle can do and for the freight sitting on it. CoverMy is free to use. The core is damage to the vehicle and legal liability for damage you cause to others. Heavy motor wordings then add a set of covers that reflect what happens when a large vehicle has an incident, because the consequences extend well beyond the truck itself.
Damage to the truck and damage to what it is carrying are two different problems. Carriers liability responds where you are legally liable for loss or damage to a customer's goods while they are in your care. Marine cargo or goods in transit cover responds to the goods themselves. Which one you need depends on your contracts and whose goods they are. Get your broker to read the carriage terms you sign, because many contracts push more liability onto the carrier than the default position would.
Heavy vehicle repairs can run for weeks, and parts for some prime movers come from overseas. If the truck is the business, a claim that pays for the repair but nothing for the eight weeks it sits in a workshop is only half a solution. Some policies include a downtime benefit, others offer it as an option, and the daily amounts and waiting periods vary widely. This is worth comparing carefully between quotes rather than assuming it is standard.
The fleet schedule and values come first, then the work. Local distribution and long haul interstate are priced differently, as is the type of freight. Dangerous goods, livestock and refrigerated loads each raise their own questions. Underwriters will ask about driver experience and turnover, fatigue management, maintenance records and whether vehicles are fitted with telematics. Your claims record over the past few years carries real weight, particularly the frequency of small incidents.

It varies with the vehicle, the freight, the routes and your claims record. A single rigid doing metro work and a prime mover running interstate are very different risks. Underwriters also weigh driver experience and maintenance. A broker can put the details to several heavy motor insurers and come back with real figures.
Not automatically. Damage to the truck and liability for your customer's freight are separate covers. Carriers liability or goods in transit cover deals with the freight. Which you need depends on your carriage contracts, so have your broker read them.
It pays an agreed amount for each day the vehicle is off the road following a covered incident. Whether you need it depends on whether you can absorb weeks without that truck earning. Daily limits, waiting periods and maximum durations differ a lot between policies, so compare those rather than just the premium.
Usually they can be listed alongside prime movers, and many policies also contemplate non owned trailers you have hooked up. The terms vary. If you regularly pull trailers belonging to customers or subcontractors, raise it specifically.
If you employ drivers, yes. Workers compensation is a statutory requirement and is arranged through your state scheme or a licensed insurer depending on where you operate. It is separate from the motor policy. Owner drivers and subcontractors raise their own questions, which your broker can walk you through.
