Commercial motor insurance
Utes, vans and work vehicles carrying tools, stock or staff. Get quotes from brokers who write cover around how the vehicle actually earns its keep.
The moment a vehicle starts doing work, a personal motor policy becomes the wrong product. Insurers draw a line between private use and business use, and a claim made on a private policy for a vehicle that was carrying stock or tools is where that line gets tested. Commercial motor covers vehicles used in a business, from a single tradesman's ute through to a handful of vans. CoverMy is free to use. Tell us what you run and licensed Australian brokers come back with options.
The structure is similar to a private motor policy, but the terms are written for business use. Cover is normally comprehensive, responding to damage to your vehicle and to damage you cause to others. Where it differs is in the extras that only matter when a vehicle is working.
This trips people up regularly. A commercial motor policy insures the vehicle. It does not automatically insure the several thousand dollars of tools in the back of it, or the stock being delivered. Some policies offer a limited amount for contents, but the sums are often modest. Tools of trade cover and goods in transit cover deal with those risks properly. If you carry anything valuable, ask your broker to price them alongside the motor policy so there is no gap between the two.
Insurers look at the vehicle, the work it does and who drives it. A van doing suburban deliveries is a different risk to a ute travelling long distances between regional sites. Annual kilometres, the radius you operate in and overnight parking all feed in. Driver history matters, and where employees drive, insurers will want to know about your youngest and least experienced drivers. Claims over the last few years carry weight, as does the excess you are prepared to hold.
Individual commercial motor policies work well up to a point. Once you are running several vehicles, managing separate renewals and excesses becomes a job in itself, and you lose the ability to be rated on your own claims experience rather than on each vehicle individually. Insurers generally start looking at fleet arrangements from around ten vehicles, though it varies. If you are near that mark, ask your broker to quote both ways and compare.

Generally not if the vehicle is used for business. Insurers distinguish between private use, business use and carrying goods for hire or reward, and cover can be affected if the use does not match what was disclosed. Describe the actual use when you apply and let the insurer price it properly.
Usually not under the motor policy, or only for a limited amount. Tools of trade cover is a separate product and typically responds to theft and damage away from your premises, often with conditions around forced entry and locked storage. Worth pricing alongside the vehicle.
It depends on the vehicle, the work it does, the kilometres, where it is kept overnight and who drives it. A single ute for a sole trader and a van doing city deliveries with several drivers sit in different brackets. A broker can put your details to several insurers and come back with real figures.
Most commercial policies contemplate employee drivers, but the terms vary and some apply extra excesses for young or inexperienced drivers. If you have staff under 25 driving, disclose it. It affects the premium but it is far better than discovering the position at claim time.
Often yes, though usually up to a stated limit and sometimes only if it was declared. Racking, shelving, refrigeration units and vehicle wraps can add up quickly. Tell your broker what is fitted so the sum insured reflects the vehicle as it actually stands.
