Goods in transit insurance

Goods in transit insurance quotes from licensed Australian brokers

Your property policy covers stock at the warehouse. Once it is on a truck it is somewhere else entirely, and usually somewhere uninsured.

Property policies are written around a location. The moment stock leaves that location it falls outside them, and the motor policy on the vehicle covers the vehicle rather than what is in it. Goods in transit fills that gap, covering your own property while it is being moved, whether by your own vehicles or by a carrier you have engaged. It is a small policy that resolves a surprisingly common blind spot. CoverMy is free to use, and licensed Australian brokers come back with options.

What goods in transit covers

The policy responds to loss of or damage to goods while they are in transit, and usually while they are being loaded and unloaded. Cover can be arranged for your own vehicles, for goods sent by third party carriers, or both.

  • Stock, materials, equipment and tools while being transported
  • Loading and unloading, which is where a good share of damage happens
  • Goods carried in your own vehicles and goods sent with carriers
  • Temporary storage during a journey, subject to time limits
  • Cover per vehicle or per sending, depending on how the policy is written
  • Options for refrigerated goods, exhibitions and interstate movements

Sending goods with a carrier does not make them the carrier's problem

This is the misconception that costs businesses money. Most carriers trade under conditions that sharply limit their liability, often to a nominal amount per consignment or per kilogram, and many exclude liability altogether unless you have paid for an additional service. So when a pallet is destroyed in a carrier's yard, the recovery you get may be a fraction of what the goods were worth. Insuring the goods yourself is generally simpler and cheaper than fighting over carriage conditions after the event.

Carriers need a different policy

If you are the one doing the carrying for other people, this is not the policy you need. Carriers liability responds where you are legally liable for loss or damage to a customer's goods in your care. Goods in transit covers your own property. Businesses that do both, moving their own stock and carrying for customers, often need both covers, and the boundary should be drawn explicitly rather than assumed.

What affects the price

The type of goods leads. Electronics, tobacco, alcohol, copper and pharmaceuticals attract theft attention and are priced accordingly, while bulk building materials are far less exciting to a thief. After that comes the annual value carried, the maximum value on any one vehicle or sending, the routes and distances, and whether vehicles are left loaded overnight. Overnight security conditions are common, and failing one is a frequent reason claims get declined.

Frequently asked questions

Is my stock covered by my business insurance while it is being delivered?

Usually not. Property policies apply at the insured location, and a motor policy covers the vehicle rather than the load. Some business packs include a small transit sub limit, but it is often well below what a full load is worth. Ask your broker to check what your current policies actually say.

The carrier says they are insured. Is that enough?

Rarely. Carriers generally trade under conditions limiting their liability to a nominal amount, sometimes per kilogram, and many exclude it unless you pay for extra cover. Even where a carrier is at fault, recovery can be a fraction of the value. Insuring the goods yourself is usually simpler and cheaper.

What does goods in transit insurance cost?

It depends on the type of goods, the annual value carried, the maximum value at risk on any one vehicle, and the routes. Attractive goods such as electronics and alcohol cost more than building materials. A broker can put your details to several insurers and come back with figures.

Are my tools covered under this policy?

Tools travelling as cargo can be, but tools of trade used in your work are usually better covered under a separate tools of trade policy, which responds at sites and in storage as well as in transit. If you are a tradesperson, that is generally the right product. Your broker will point you to the correct one.

What are the security conditions?

Most policies impose conditions on unattended vehicles, particularly overnight, such as requiring locked and immobilised vehicles or storage in a secured yard. Breaching a condition is one of the most common causes of declined transit claims, so make sure your drivers know what the policy requires.
