Ask someone what their contents are worth and they will usually name a figure based on the television and the couch. Then you count the clothes, the kitchen, the tools in the shed, the bikes, the laptops and the things in the garage, and the real number is often two or three times the guess. Contents insurance covers what you would take with you if you moved, whether you own the home or rent it. CoverMy is free to use, and licensed Australian brokers come back with options.

What contents insurance usually covers

The base is loss or damage to your belongings from events like fire, storm, theft and burst pipes, at the address on your policy. Beyond that the differences between policies show up in how items are valued and what happens outside the home.

  • Household belongings, furniture, appliances, clothing and electronics
  • New for old replacement on most items, with limits on some categories
  • Legal liability as an occupier, which renters often overlook
  • Portable valuables away from home, usually as an option
  • Contents in storage or in transit when you move, on some wordings
  • Spoiled food and motor burnout on many policies

New for old, and where it stops

Most contents policies replace items with new equivalents rather than paying depreciated value, which is why the sum insured needs to reflect replacement cost rather than what you could sell everything for. There are common exceptions. Clothing and linen are sometimes settled on a depreciated basis, and there are usually internal limits on categories like jewellery, watches, artwork and collectables. If you own anything that would breach those limits, it normally needs to be specified individually.

Renters need this more than they think

If you rent, the landlord's policy covers the building and the landlord's own fixtures. It does not cover your belongings, and it does not cover your liability if you cause damage. A burst pipe in the flat above, a break in, or a fire that started in your kitchen all land on you. Contents cover for renters is usually inexpensive relative to what it protects, and the liability section alone is worth having.

Portable valuables and cover away from home

Standard contents cover applies at your address. The laptop that lives in a backpack, the camera you take on holiday, the engagement ring you wear every day and the bike you ride to work are all away from home much of the time. Portable valuables cover, sometimes called personal effects, extends to specified or unspecified items outside the house, often worldwide. It is usually optional and worth pricing if you carry anything of value.

Frequently asked questions

How do I work out my contents sum insured?

Go room by room and price replacement rather than resale. Include clothing, kitchenware, tools, sporting gear, bikes, electronics and anything in the garage or shed. Most insurers publish a contents calculator. The exercise takes half an hour and it is the difference between being paid out properly and finding a shortfall at claim time.

Do I need contents insurance if I rent?

The landlord's policy does not cover your belongings or your liability as an occupier. If you would struggle to replace everything you own after a fire or a break in, contents cover is worth having. The liability section is often the more valuable part and it is easy to overlook.

Is my jewellery covered?

Usually up to an internal limit per item and in total, which is often lower than a single decent ring. Items above that limit need to be specified on the policy, generally with a valuation. Do it properly at the start rather than discovering the limit after a loss.

Are my belongings covered outside the house?

Not under base contents cover, which applies at the insured address. Portable valuables or personal effects cover extends to items away from home, sometimes worldwide, either for specified items or a blanket amount. It is normally an optional extra.

What does contents insurance cost?

It depends on the sum insured, your postcode, the type of dwelling, security and your claims history. Renters in an apartment and owners in a flood exposed suburb will see very different numbers. A broker can put your details to several insurers at once.

Does CoverMy sell the insurance?

No. CoverMy passes your request to licensed Australian brokers who contact you directly. All advice, quotes and policies come from the broker you deal with. There is no cost and no obligation.
