Caravan insurance
Touring vans, camper trailers and on site vans. Cover for the van, what is inside it, and the damage it can do when things go wrong on the highway.
Your car insurance covers the car. Once a van is hitched behind it, most of the risk sits outside that policy. A caravan can be worth as much as the vehicle towing it, it carries thousands of dollars of contents, and if it comes loose or rolls it can cause serious damage to other people's property. Caravan insurance deals with all three. CoverMy is free to use. Tell us about the van and how you use it, and licensed Australian brokers come back with options.
Most policies are comprehensive, responding to accidental damage, storm, fire and theft, whether the van is on the road, in a park or parked at home. The useful detail sits in the extras, which vary more between insurers than the headline cover does.
A van that lives permanently at a coastal park and a van that crosses the Nullarbor twice a year present quite different risks. On site vans face storm, flood and hail more than collision, and where the park sits matters a great deal. Touring vans face road risk, gravel damage and theft from remote stops. Some policies are written specifically for one or the other, so tell your broker which you are, and if the van moves between both, say that too.
Add up what actually travels in a van: bedding, cookware, a television, tools, fishing gear, e bikes, camera equipment. Most people land well above the default contents limit on a standard policy. Annexes, awnings, solar panels and lithium battery systems are frequently excluded unless declared, and they are not cheap to replace. Go through the list with your broker rather than accepting the standard sum insured.
The value and age of the van lead, followed by where it is kept when you are not using it. A locked garage or a secure storage facility reads better than a driveway or a street. Insurers also look at how much you tow, whether you travel off sealed roads, your claims history and the excess you choose. Security like a hitch lock or wheel clamp can help, and some insurers require it for theft cover on higher value vans.

Usually only for limited liability while the van is attached, and not for damage to the van itself. Some motor policies extend a small amount of cover to a trailer, but it rarely reflects what a modern caravan is worth. A separate caravan policy covers the van, its contents and the liability properly.
It depends on the value and age of the van, where it is stored, how much you tow and your claims history. An on site van in a cyclone exposed park and a touring van garaged in the suburbs sit in very different brackets. A broker can put your details to several insurers and come back with real figures.
Most policies include contents up to a stated limit, and that limit is often lower than people expect. High value items such as e bikes, camera gear or tools may need to be specified. Add up what actually travels with you and ask your broker to set the sum insured accordingly.
These frequently need to be declared and listed rather than being automatically included. Annexes, awnings, solar systems and lithium batteries can add several thousand dollars. Tell your broker what is fitted so nothing sits outside the policy.
It depends on the wording. Some policies cover unsealed roads without issue, others restrict or exclude certain tracks and remote areas. If your trips include serious off road travel, raise it before you leave rather than relying on a general reading of the policy.
